Looking back at May 16th “Per Diem” article by John Hollinger at ESPN Insider, which was written after the Celtics-Sixers series was tied after 2 games, I found a little bit of comfort. Since the C’s lost on Friday to drop back to 2-2 in the series, my hopes of being one of the 31% of fans at CelticsBlog that thought it would be the “Celtics in 5 games” were dashed. Most (more…)

Prognosticating the Celtics has turned into hardest job in the northeast this side of Mt. Washington meteorologists. After a Game 2 where the Philadelphia 76ers made the Celtics earn any monikers that people had given them coming into the season (“slow”, “old”, “sloppy”, etc.), the Celtics absolutely trounced the 76ers in Game 3, with a 16-point win that required minimal effort after the first few minutes of the second quarter. Random fluctuations (more…)

BOSTON — Celtics coach Doc Rivers said Ray Allen (right ankle bone spurs) did not participate in the heavy portions of the team’s offday practice and this morning’s shootaround, but he felt good enough after going through his pregame routine that he’ll be available off the bench in Game 1 of an Eastern Conference semifinal series against the Philadelphia 76ers. The Celtics will also have Avery Bradley (sore left rotator cuff) and (more…)

BOSTON — With the Hawks facing what amounts to a must-win situation in Sunday’s Game 4 of an Eastern Conference quarterfinal series against the Celtics, Al Horford has been activated and the team considers him a game-time decision. Horford tore his left pectoral muscle on Jan. 11 in Indiana and was not expected to be back for this series, but with Atlanta’s season hanging in the balance, it appears he’s going to (more…)

By Draft Day in June, eleven years will have passed since the Boston Celtics made Joe Johnson the 10th overall selection in the 2001 NBA draft. “Jumpshot Joe”, what I called him, seemed to be the perfect third fiddle to Paul Pierce and Antoine Walker after bursting into the league early in the 2001-2002 season. Joe grasped a starting job by his fourth game and averaged 12.5 points, with two 20+ point (more…)

With the Celtics headed to another postseason meeting with the Hawks, Jeff suggested I post an excerpt from the Hawks-Celtics chapter of my book, which chronicles the 2008 title run in great detail, as a preview or taster for the 2012 series. The whole chapter would be too long, but I’m going to give you a couple of lengthy excerpts, one today and one tomorrow. We’ll start by looking at how the (more…)

BOSTON — Rapid reaction following the Boston Celtics’ 87-74 victory over the Milwaukee Bucks Thursday night at TD Garden. * HOW THE GAME WAS WON: Give the game ball(s) to the Celtics’ reserves. This was their night, as, frankly, it should have been, given the circumstances. The Celtics bench was huge in the second quarter, scoring 28 points to Milwaukee’s 9 as Boston opened up a double-digit lead it would maintain throughout (more…)

The Celtics almost pulled it off. They walked into this game unafraid and said to the Atlanta Hawks, we’ll beat you with 4 All Stars tied behind our backs. And they almost did it. Time and time again they pulled within one point, but to the Hawks credit (I guess) they held us off each time. They did what they were supposed to do, win the game, so they get one step (more…)

Nathaniel S. Butler/NBAE/Getty ImagesPaul Pierce and Carmelo Anthony were secondary storylines on Tuesday night. The Celtics missed an opportunity to lock up the Atlantic Division title Tuesday night in New York, though they shouldn’t lose too much sleep over it. The Knicks’ bench tandem of Steve Novak and J.R. Smith was simply ridiculous from beyond the arc (a combined 15 of 20) and Boston can’t do much more than tip its cap when (more…)
